Hit Publish
I struggled to write this post.
After spending the last five years launching different projects and building specific brands, I was terrified about starting this one. Why? Because I wanted my first post to be top-notch.
I wanted to start with a bang. I wanted to burst out of the gates and quickly establish a degree of clout.
In other words, I wanted this post to be perfect.
So, I’ve sat on it and toiled with it for weeks all while delaying the launch of this site. I allowed my perfectionist tenancies to cripple me. Finally it dawned on me that this struggle is a prime example of why I’m kickstarting a project called, Neutral Goes Nowhere.
This site is dedicated to giving back. My desire is to help you grow. From here on out, I’ll be sharing hard lessons I’ve learned as a small time freelancer and twenty-something professional. To get started, I’ve decided to share the biggest nugget of wisdom I’ve learned this summer. I like to call it, “hit publish.” Here it is:
90% perfect and published always changes more lives than 100% perfect and stuck in your head
The things you create and actually share will always out perform the things that stay stuck in your head. I’m sure your ideas are great. They might even dramatically alter lives, but if you don’t share them it doesn’t matter.
If your goal is forward motion, you must share your work. Sometimes this means getting comfortable with A- or even B+ work.
So when you begin to stall and feel yourself slipping into neutral, ask yourself:
“Do I want to make headway? Do I want to push forward?”
If the answer is yes, then you have to “hit publish.”
Moving forward with this Neutral Goes Nowhere experiment, I will continue to “hit publish.” It’s my commitment to you. I will continue to share lessons and insight in hopes that it provides for you something of value. Please join me- it’s going to be an awesome ride!

Hey Brandon, always been a fan of your writing and can’t wait to read more. I’m trying to put together a website as well!
Let me know how I can help. I have a fair amount of experience with web design. Glad to have your support, man!
I love this because it echoes my thoughts right now as well. “Neutral Goes Nowhere” is a perfect way of putting it. Over the past year I’ve slowly been trying to get more and more serious about pursuing writing as a real-life career and not just a “Hey wouldn’t it be cool if…” scenario. And as I edit things your 90% perfect is better than 100% scenario is showing true. Every time I read back through something, I always see at least one thing that doesn’t sound right to me. If I let myself, I will edit forever. So instead, I have to do just a few edits to straighten things up, make them flow, and tighten the story, but then I need to leave it alone and let it go. If I edit forever, I’ll never “hit publish”. I love this post and look forward to seeing what else you have to say. =)
Thanks Lissa! Truth be known, I edited this post four times after pushing it live. It’s tough to let one’s work stand on its own. Now that I know you keep a blog, I’ll be adding it to my RSS reader.
That quote above is a shirt waiting to happen. So good!
